HOUSTON – A much needed expansion and renovation project is underway at the Houston Fire Station and was approved by the Board of Aldermen at the April 7 meeting.
The department has hired three additional full-time firefighters who will be in training to assume their duties. Billy Watkins, Jeffery Jones and Aaron Tedford will join the current team of Jonathan Blankenship, Jason Davis and Mitchell Slaughter and the addition will provide two firefighters on duty at all times.
The renovation to the firehouse will provide living quarters for two people. The current station has abbreviated living quarters for one firefighter.
The board approved the bid from Ronnie Fisackerly of Houston to create the addition 440-foot space in a traditional block and brick exterior. The renovation will also provide extra room for records and data.
City employees, paid and volunteer firefighters and other volunteer labor are being used to remove the bricks from the east side off the existing building in preparation of the addition.
The construction will help to satisfy requirements of the Mississippi Fire Rating bureau. The construction was bid at $24,754.50.
