HATCHIE BOTTOM — Falkner High School student Clay Stewart, 15, died as a result of an ATV accident early Sunday evening in Tippah County near the Alcorn County line.

Stewart was the only person on the ATV. He was coming out of Hatchie Bottom on a straight stretch of County Road 524, a gravel road, when the vehicle went out of control and rolled over on him. A second person on another ATV was with him at the time of the wreck, which was reported about 6:50 p.m.

He was flown from the scene by helicopter to Magnolia Hospital, where efforts to save him were unsuccessful, Tippah authorities said.

Stewart’s visitation is Tuesday (Oct. 4) at Ripley Funeral Home. The funeral will be Wednesday (Oct. 5) at 2 p.m. at Ripley Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

Stewart, a sophomore, was a member of the 2010 Class 1A North Half Champion Falkner High School baseball team. Last season, he saw limited action in 14 games, batting .062 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The Falkner Lady Eagles were scheduled to begin the MHSAA Class 1A State Slow-pitch Softball Tournament Tuesday, but that series has been rescheduled for Thursday beginning at 1 p.m. against the Blue Mountain Lady Cougars.
