Fatality involving State Inmate

By Miss. Highway Patrol

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating an accident in Prentiss County that claimed the life of a state inmate.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., Troopers were dispatched, at the request of the Prentiss County Sheriff’s Office, to County Road 1101 in Prentiss County to investigate a traffic accident involving a pedestrian.

Upon arrival it appeared Melvin E Weathers, 28, of Booneville, was working on the side of County Road 1101 when he apparently stepped out in the road way and was struck by a 2002 Dodge Ram pickup operated by Chris Davis, 23, also of Booneville.

Weathers was transported from the scene to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Booneville where he later died from his injuries sustained in the accident.

Weathers was a State inmate serving in Prentiss County through the Joint State-County Inmate Work Program. At the time of the accident he was working on a road crew assigned to the first district supervisor of Prentiss County.

Davis was uninjured in the accident.

The case remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol with the assistance of the Mississippi Highway Patrol Accident Reconstruction Team.
