Feds claim false tax credits filed by Carter

By NEMS Daily Journal

ABERDEEN – Columbus tax return preparer Cynthia H. Carter faces 17 federal counts she filed fake claims for first-time homeowner refunds.
Carter, 49, is free on $5,000 unsecured bond.
She faces formal charges in Aberdeen on Thursday.
An 11-page federal indictment accuses her of filing for the tax credit, which was available to taxpayers who bought their first main home during 2008-2009.
The clients she helped secure the credit for were not eligible, prosecutors claim.
If convicted of all charges, she faces up to 145 years in prison and $4.25 million in fines.
