Feds set to give Tupelo cigarette building

TUPELO – The city could have the old Milam Manufacturing building by the end of the year.

The federal government is set to release the facility, which was seized several years ago in a high-profile contraband cigarette bust, according to city attorney John Hill.

Hill presented a Memorandum of Understanding to the City Council on Monday. The MOU is to establish the transfer of the building from the United States to the city.

Council members will vote on the MOU this week, at which point it goes back to the federal government for final approval.

Hill said the building could be in Tupelo’s possession within a month. At that point, the city will begin converting the empty structure into its new police headquarters using money from a years-old bond issue.
