TUPELO – Artist Lucia Randle’s “laughing Elvis” poster for the 2011 Tupelo Elvis Presley Festival was unveiled Thursday.
The Fulton artist said she wanted to create a “fun, whimsical” image that represented both the city of Tupelo and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
The horizontal poster, unveiled at the Downtown Main Street Association office, features a large profile photo of a laughing Elvis to the right, with the festival title and information to the left.
“I just wanted it to be happy,” Randle said.
The festival is June 2-5, and T-shirts and posters will go on sale by the end of April.
Randle said she shied away from using performance photos of Elvis, which have often been included in past posters.
“The photo I used is a close-up of Elvis, and I think it shows his humanness. You can’t help but look at it and smile,” she said.
Debbie Brangenberg, Main Street’s executive director, said Randle also will create the 2012 festival poster.
Tickets for the Elvis festival will go on sale today via Ticketmaster. Friday and Saturday night Fairpark concert tickets are $15 each, or $25 for both if tickets are purchased by May 31.
The festival also will have concerts by Elvis tribute artists – including all four of the Tupelo Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist winners – as well as a parade, pageant, 5K run, movie poster exhibit, pet parade and a Sunday gospel concert. Tickets to the Saturday night tribute artist concert at The Lyric Theatre have already sold out, Brangenberg said.
