Fire consumes dozens of hay bales in Palmetto

VERONA – Roughly 80 large, round bales of hay caught fire in the rural Palmetto community on Friday but firefighters say there’s not much they can do about it.

The bales’ compact nature traps the heat and flames inside, making it impossible to completely extinguish, said Bobby Briley, chief of the Palmetto-Old Union Volunteer Fire Department.

Two engines responded to the fire on County Road 261 shortly before 10 a.m. Firefighters doused water on the bales and the surrounding area to prevent the flames from spreading, but Briley said it could take up to two weeks before the bales burn out.

Clyde Metcalf owns the property, said the department’s assistant chief, Jason Dye.

No injuries were reported, and no other property was damaged in the incident. The fire department will continue to monitor the situation over the next few weeks.
