Fire damages Rienzi church fellowship hall

RIENZI – A fire reported by a passerby at Danville Baptist Church on Alcorn County Road 409, Rienzi, before 4 p.m. Friday was extinguished within about 30 to 40 minutes, said county Emergency Management Director Ricky Gibens.
The fellowship hall at the church sustained moderate damage in the attic, Gibens said. By 6 p.m. a fire cleanup and restoration business was on the scene to begin cleaning up water and smoke damage.
Though the exact cause of the fire had not been identified, Gibens said it appeared the fire may have started in electrical wiring from the fuse box to a light.
The sanctuary sustained no damage, but Gibens said Pastor Charlie Cooper said services in the sanctuary might not be held until Dec. 9 to guard the health of a number of members who are elderly.
