Fire in Grenada apartments leaves elderly homeless

GRENADA — An apartment-complex fire in the northern Mississippi city of Grenada has left 15 to 20 elderly people without homes.

No injuries were reported, but some firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion.

Grenada Fire Chief Herman Simpson tells WTVA television that the fire was reported about 1:30 a.m. Friday at the Barwin Apartments, which has 16 units.

The fire started on the ground floor and spread to the attic. It is under investigation.

Residents were taken to a temporary shelter while the American Red Cross finds places for them to stay.
