Ole Miss and Mississippi State won’t square off on the football field for another four months, but organizers are “cooking” up a little fun which kicks off on Saturday, August 18.
You’re urged to mark your calendar and sign up to participate in the first Rebel/Bulldog Tailgate Challenge on the Pontotoc Court Square.
There is no entry fee to participate in the cooking portion of the BBQ contest and no fee to reserve a spot on the court square.
However, you must register to participate and you must declare as a member of the Rebel or Bulldog team.
“This whole event is all about having fun, there’s no entry fee to participate in any of the competitions that day,” said Ellen Russell, director of the Pontotoc County Chamber of Commerce/Main Street Association.
“This is strictly a little friendly competition among fans, some good BBQ, an afternoon of fun and bragging rites for a year,” Russell said.
“Also please note, that no food will be sold that afternoon when the cooking is done.”
Registration ends at noon on Saturday, August 18, the same time that cooking can begin.
The BBQ challenge will include four categories: ribs, chicken, anything but pork and anything veggie on the grill.
Participants must select at least two categories to be judged, and you must be registered to be judged in the proper category.
There will be individual winners in each category.
The overall cooking prize will go the Rebel or Bulldog team, decided by the overall team points.
Folks are also invited to come up and tailgate on the court square.
The Best Tailgate Tent will be selected from the Rebels and Bulldogs.
To be judged, tailgate tent participants must register by noon also.
The team captains for the Rebel/Bulldog teams are Rebel Preston Campbell and Bulldog Randy (Lep) Lepard.
An award will also be given for the Best Storefront Window Decoration, showing their Rebel or Bulldog pride.
The storefront decoration competition is open to any business in Pontotoc, but participants must register by noon to be judged.
Cooking and tents won’t be the only thing going on at the square that Saturday.
Bands will perform from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m.
All winners will be announced at 5 p.m and music, food and fun will conclude at 7 p.m.
Court square space is limited, so persons are urged to call the park and recreation department at 489-1882, or the chamber/Main Street at 489-5042 to claim a spot or get more information.
