The Itawamba County Pratt Memorial Library will remain closed for at least a week following some severe weekend flooding.
According to Head Librarian Jeffrey C. Martin, a plumbing blockage, coupled with heavy weekend rains, caused the building’s toilets to overflow and flood the building. Although the library’s carpet is ruined and will have to be replaced, Martin said most of the library’s collection remains unharmed.
“Thankfully, our collection is pretty much untouched,” he said. “Right now, we have dryers and dehumidifiers going to help remove any moisture.”
He said it’s important to keep the library as dry as possible to avoid the books molding.
As of now, there is no definitive date for the library’s reopening. Martin said, however, that they are working as diligently as possible to clean up the mess and open the doors once again.
“Hopefully,” he said, “it will be very soon.”
