Former boyfriend charged in Anna McCoy's death

SALTILLO – The former boyfriend of Anna Catherine McCoy has been charged in her April 15 shooting death.
Thomas Ward, 23, was arrested after a Lee County Grand Jury charged him with depraved heart murder, which is murder resulting from an act of reckless disregard for the safety of others.
His bond was set at $500,000.
Saltillo Police Chief Steve Brooks said Ward was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Saltillo at his home. Ward, described as McCoy’s ex-boyfriend, is listed in the phone book as living at 134 Willoughby Oaks Drive, which is where McCoy’s body was found April 15.
McCoy, a 20-year-old soccer player at Itawamba Community College, was found in an upstairs bedroom with a gunshot wound to the mouth.
A man reportedly was in the room with McCoy at the time of the shooting, but authorities would not comment then about whether or not Ward was that person.
Lee County Coroner Carolyn Gillentine-Green and the state medical examiner’s officer ruled McCoy’s death a homicide shortly after the woman died, but Brooks said he wanted to make sure all the forensic evidence was in before an arrest was made.
