Former Corinth minister arrested

CORINTH – An 86-year-old preacher who once worked in Corinth was arrested Thursday in North Carolina on child molestation charges.
Clarence Caldwell Arquitt Jr., of Sanford, N.C., refused to return to Georgia where the charges were brought and was arrested by the Lee County, N.C., Sheriff’s Department on charges of child molestation, aggravated child molestation and sodomy. He was released on $30,000 bond.
The charges sprang from a complaint by his granddaughter, now in her 20s, who said he molested her when he lived in Sandy Springs, Ga., and in Woodstock, Ga., between 1991 and 1999. The woman said she was his victim from the age of 3 until she was 8.
Sandy Springs police investigators are looking for other possible victims in the numerous locations where Arquitt served as a minister, including in Corinth while he was affiliated with the Foote Street Church of Christ.
Corinth Police Chief David Lancaster said his department had not been directly contacted about the case, and he had no record by that name in his computerized police files.
However, Lancaster said his department would communicate with the Georgia authorities to see if his department has any open cases for the time period Arquitt was in Corinth.
Anyone with information may report it to Lt. Steve Rose, Sandy Springs Police Department, (770) 551-6927, (404) 886-1287 cell or email srose@sandyspringsga.gov.
