Former governor set for honors in MLK service

TUPELO – Former Gov. William Winter will be honored next month during the Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative service at the Civic Auditorium.
Winter will receive the Drum Major award during the Jan. 17 service, which starts at 2:30 p.m. and is free to the public.
The service will be one of a weekend full of events celebrating King’s life.
An “Apollo Night” at the Civic Auditorium is set for Friday at 6 p.m.; a black-tie banquet will be Saturday night at the St. Paul Christian Life Center; and the communitywide service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
On Monday, the official observance of King’s birthday, a motorcade will leave the VF Mall at 11 a.m. en route to the St. Paul Life Centerbirthday celebration is planned at the St. Paul Life Center.
