TUPELO – The widow of former Smithville Mayor Earnest Chism died Friday, becoming the town’s 16th victim of the April 27 tornado.
Maxine Chism, 80, died at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in Columbus from injuries suffered during the storm, according to Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley.
Chism’s death brings the total number of storm dead for Monroe County to 17, with all but one from Smithville.
Earnest Chism served four terms as mayor, and current Mayor Gregg Kennedy was his vice mayor for several years. He recalled Maxine Chism with fondness.
“She will be truly missed in our town,” said Kennedy. “She was like everyone’s sweet grandmother. That’s the best way to describe her. I’d see her in the Pig (Piggly Wiggly) and she would just stop you and talk. She loved Smithville just as her husband did. I’m just sad to hear she’s gone.”
Earnest Chism died in 2005, and his widow lived in their home at 60011 Elm St.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by E. E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory.
