Former Miss. lawmaker dead at 79

PONCE INLET, Fla. (AP) — Thomas H. “Tommy” Campbell III, a former member of the Mississippi Legislature, has died in Ponce Inlet, Fla. He was 79.

Officials with Baggett and Summers Funeral Home in Daytona Beach, Fla., say Campbell died Monday. A memorial service will be held later, according to the funeral home.

Campbell was a native of Yazoo City. He earned his law degree from the University of Mississippi and practiced law in his hometown.

Campbell served five terms in the Mississippi House for five terms, where he Elections Committee chairman. He also served as state fiscal officer and an assistant higher commissioner at the state College Board.

He retired to Florida where he had lived the past 15 years.

Survivors include two sons, a brother, two sisters and five grandchildren.
