SHANNON – Former Mayor G.A. Herndon was remembered Thursday as a hard worker with a soft spot for children.
Herndon, who served as mayor from 1993 to 2002, died Wednesday at the Community Hospice at Darlington Oaks in Verona. He will be buried today.
Herndon, 73, served two full terms as mayor and was in his third when he had to resign due to health issues.
Current Mayor Ronnie Hallmark served as alderman under Herndon for eight years.
“He was known as the working mayor,” said Hallmark. “He was a good mayor. We came on board at the same time so we all learned together. He taught me a lot.”
City Clerk Mary Lee Helms has worked for the town of Shannon for nearly 33 years. She said even though Herndon’s biggest accomplishment was the construction of the city park and baseball fields, his biggest passion was the children in the town.
“He loved the kids,” Helms said. “He’d always have to laugh and talk with them when they came into City Hall. He was very interested in the town’s youth.”
