By The Associated Press

OXFORD — Lafayette County schools superintendent Mike Foster will retire Dec. 31.

The Oxford Eagle reports the 58-year-old Foster has been with the school district for 15 years and has been its superintendent since 2002.

Foster has been a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, director of transportation and assistant superintendent.

He won a special election as superintendent in 2001 and re-election in 2003 and 2007.

The job of superintendent had been an elected position until 2009, when a new law calls for the superintendent to be appointed by the school board.
