Four local gymnasts head to regional competition

Four members of Elite Gymnastics II in Tupelo will compete with the Mississippi team Sunday, April 9, at the Level 8 Region VIII Gymnastics Championships in Marietta, Ga.
The Elite II gymnasts are:
Morgan Brekke, 13, Tupelo: She is the state champion on balance beam and in the all-around. This is Morgan’s third time to qualify to regionals. She had Mississippi’s top event finish last year at level 7 regionals with a silver medal on the uneven bars.
Chamberlyn Grubbs, 10, Saltillo: She is the reigning state champion on uneven bars. She had the highest all-around score for Mississippi at last season’s level 7 regionals.
Alyssa McClain, 11, Saltillo: This will be her second trip to regionals. She had the top score for Mississippi on balance beam, her favorite event, at the 2010 level 7 regionals.
Rachel Lewellen, 11, Ripley: This is her first trip to regionals; she was alternate to the level 7 team last year. A solid all-around gymnast, Rachel can put up big scores on all four events.
Three gymnasts from the Gulf Coast and one from Hattiesburg round out the Mississippi team.
Eight states comprise Region VIII through USAG Gymnastics: Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina. The states will compete head-to-head for the team title.
