Francis sentenced in trooper’s death

PONTOTOC – William Andrew Francis of Saltillo was sentenced today to 40 years in prison, with 33 suspended, for the death of Trooper Steve Hood during a 2009 high-speed chase.

Hood died from injuries when he lost control of his Mississippi Highway Patrol vehicle on a north Lee County road as he chased a car driven by Francis.

Francis’ trial had been continued across several terms of circuit court. Most recently, it was set for Aug. 23.

Circuit Judge William Gardner III sentenced Francis in Pontotoc County.

Francis, 26, was indicted in July 2009 on a charge of manslaughter by culpable negligence. He was freed on $100,000 bond.

He originally was charged with felony fleeing, and an original bond was set at $1 million.
