TUPELO – Thousands of sleeves will roll up Tuesday.
For the 15th annual Live Well Health Fair, North Mississippi Medical Center and the District II office of the Mississippi Department of Health will once again team up to give free flu shots Tuesday.
The health fair will run from noon to 7 p.m. at the Tupelo Furniture Market Building V on Coley Road.
NMMC-Tupelo has purchased 5,500 doses of flu vaccine, said Community Health Director Liz Dawson. Those doses will stretch beyond 5,500 arms because children don’t get a full dose.
“Our goal is to help individuals live happier, healthier lives,” Dawson said.
In addition to a shot in the arm, there will be free health screenings including for anxiety, blood pressure, glaucoma, depression, sleep apnea, peripheral vascular disease and body mass index. A $5 blood test is available to screen for cholesterol.
Fifty-five health care providers will have booths set up a the fair so people can find out more about common conditions and area health resources.
Kids can get in on the healthy fun. HealthWorks! Children’s Health Education Center will have its Railyard obstacle course at Live Well from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Flu shots are generally recommended to anyone who wants to avoid the flu, but they are especially emphasized for: children under 5 and adults over 65, those with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women, parents and caretakers of infants and people who live in long-term care facilities.
The shots can be given to anyone older than 6 months who doesn’t have a severe allergy to eggs or has a history of Guillan-Barre syndrome associated with flu vaccination.
Pneumonia shots also will be offered at the Live Well Health Fair for $60; participants should bring Medicaid and Medicare cards, if applicable, for the pneumonia shot.
