TUPELO – The cause of a Friday morning fire at a Tupelo nightclub remains under investigation.
A sprinkler system limited fire damage at Level 3 at 124 W. Main St. to a 1-foot by 1-foot area in the second floor, said Tupelo Fire Inspector Jason Cross. The first floor had some water damage from the sprinkler activation.
The sprinkler system was added to the building five or six years ago when Benjamin’s on Main occupied the building.
“We would have had a lot bigger fire to deal with,” if there had been no working sprinkler system, Cross said.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze when a tenant in a neighboring building smelled smoke and called 911. By the time firefighters arrived, the sprinklers had activated.
The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire; there were no injuries.
Messages left at the number listed for Level 3 inquiring about plans to reopen the nightclub were not returned Friday evening.
