FUNDING OF PAVING PROJECT DISCUSSED
AMORY – City officials here continue looking at their financial options for a road paving project that has been in the works for several months.
Amory Mayor Thomas Griffith said the city has been planning to pave roads that have not been paved in the last four or five years. “We plan to take the worst roads first,” he said.
City officials had looked at paving the roads using city equipment and workers instead of hiring the work out. But, Griffith said, this would have been too costly.
The city now is examining its funding options, including a bond issue to support the project. “We don’t know how much it would cost,” Griffith said, but a bond issue seems to be the only way to pay for a “significant amount of work.”
“There are not many other options than bond issues,” Griffith said.
The Board of Aldermen is in the process of determining project costs and how a bond issue could be repaid. Residents would have 30 days to petition against bonds if and when the city publishes its intent to issue bonds.
Griffith said he hopes paving can begin this summer.
