Funeral for Monroe firefighter held today

AMORY — The funeral for a firefighter authorities say was killed while responding to a fire call was today at 3 p.m. at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory.

Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley said in a news release that 18-year-old Jacob Anthony Carter of Amory died at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo Sunday after his SUV ran off the road, overturned and struck a tree.

The accident occurred just before noon on McCullen Road south of Amory.

Gurley says Carter was pronounced around 2 p.m.

Officials say Carter, who was a firefighter with the Becker-Athens Volunteer Fire Department.

Pallbearers were selected from members of the Honor Guard and volunteer firefighters.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are given to Becker-Athens Volunteer Fire Department, P. O. Box 60, Becker, MS 38825.
