Furniture market in Tunica in the works

By Dennis Seid/NEMS Daily Journal

Could there be a new furniture market in Mississippi, competing with Tupelo, as well as Las Vegas and High Point?

We spoke to Scott Morton, who is proposing the Tunica Furniture Market for next January 8-9, and he said he’s got 175,000 square feet of exhibition space available, spread across six casino ballrooms, the Tunica arena and another facility

A former furniture manufacturer sales rep with more than 30 years of experience in the industry, Morton and his business partner say their two-day market will appeal to retailers, buyers and exhibitors looking to get ahead of the tax-refund season.

Morton insists he’s not competing with the Tupelo Furniture Market.

“I’m not trying to compete against Tupelo – I’d like to work with them,” he said. “I want people to attend both markets.”

But a Tunica market in January would bump up against an already loaded trade show schedule, and there are some questions about whether there’s enough capital to support such an endeavor. We talk more with Morton, Tunica, the Tupelo Furniture Market and a longtime furniture industry consultant/analyst on what they think.
