Gibbs, D-West Point, takes oath in Miss. House

By The Associated Press

JACKSON — Democrat Karl Gibbs of West Point has been sworn in to succeed his late father in the Mississippi House of Representatives.

Gibbs and his family received a standing ovation from his new colleagues Thursday as he took his oath of office. He says he’s honored to be in the Legislature.

Gibbs won a special election runoff Tuesday in House District 36, which includes parts of Clay, Lowndes and Monroe counties.

The seat was left vacant by the Jan. 13 death of Democratic Rep. David Gibbs of West Point, who had served since 1993.

Karl Gibbs will serve out the current four-year term, which ends in January 2016.
