Girl Scouts cookie sales down this year

TUPELO – Blame the economy or healthful New Year’s resolutions, but Girl Scout cookie sales are down this year.
The Girl Scouts Heart of the South Council, which serves north Mississippi and several counties in west Tennessee and east Arkansas, is down by about 34,000 cases of cookies for the year, said Jenny Jones, director of marketing and communications for the council.
“The girls have done a tremendous job. I’ve seen more booth sales than I’ve ever seen, and I think they’re to be commended,” Jones said, “but we don’t know. Who’s to say it’s not some of the economy. We don’t know.”
Some troops already have met their cookie sales goals, but some haven’t. Sales are scheduled to stop this weekend, but some troops will extend their sales another week to March 12.
Devan Dunlap, 12, of Troop No. 20002, sold cookies in front of the Link Centre on Tuesday with her mom, Missy.
She’s only about 250 boxes away from her goal of 700.
Sales were sluggish at first, Devan said, but have improved.
“We usually do better, but we’re doing pretty good,” she said.
If someone doesn’t want to purchase a box of cookies for themselves, they can buy a box and donate it to the armed forces.
The Scouts are participating in a program called Troop to Troops, in which someone can purchase cookies and the Scouts will send them to troops overseas.
These cookies can be purchased from a cookie booth or from the Girl Scouts Heart of the South website.
It doesn’t matter who ends up enjoying the cookies, Jones said. The important thing is that the cookies get sold. Cookie sales are vital to the Girl Scouts.
“The closer we can get to our goal, the better we can provide services to the girls,” Jones said. “We want to keep camp affordable, keep scholarships, have training for leaders and volunteers – it all goes back to the services we can provide to every girl and every leader.”
