Girl Scouts offer camp contest

TUPELO – A week of summer adventure is up for grabs.
The Girl Scouts Heart of the South council is giving away a free week of summer camp. The contest is going on now and ends May 27. To learn more or to enter the contest, visit girlscoutshs.org/freecamp.
“It gives families who know nothing about summer camp, or say, ‘I’m not interested in Girl Scouts, but I’m looking for something to do this summer,’ the chance to experience the outdoors,” said Natalie Wilson with the Scouts’ Heart of the South council.
The nearest camp is Camp Tik-A-Witha, located in Van Vleet in Chickasaw County.
“It’s beautiful, and anything that would hold a child’s attention, they can do at the camp,” she said.
Camp Tik-A-Witha features a 20-acre lake for canoeing, swimming and kayaking, and the camp also has a rock wall, challenge course, swimming pool, diving board, slides and inflatable water toys.
The contest is open to girls who aren’t Scouts, and girls aren’t required to join the Scouts.
Girls in kindergarten through 12th grade can enter, but Wilson said the camp is best suited for girls ages 9-18.
“Girls must learn that there’s more than being in front of a computer. Let’s get outside, and let’s get active, through camping and through learning to take care of their environment,” Wilson said.
The contest is a part of the group’s 100th birthday, which they’ll celebrate officially in 2012.
