TUPELO – A bitter cold front that settled into Northeast Mississippi on Thursday brought record low temperatures Friday and could break more records today.

A spokesman for the National Weather Service in Memphis said the mercury plummeted Friday to 18 degrees in Tupelo, breaking the record low of 20 degrees set in 1943.

The low temperature in Tupelo could also break today’s record, which was set in 1932 at 18 degrees. Temperatures are expected to drop to 12 degrees with a high of 43 degrees predicted.

The low on Sunday should be a degree or two above the record low of 18 set in 1932 in Tupelo. The high on Sunday could reach 51.
