Golden Wave teams sweep THS meet

TUPELO – Colton Fremont usually swims – and wins – the 100-yard butterfly and 200 individual medley for Tupelo.
Thursday, however, was a day for different strokes.
In a high school meet at Rob Leake City Park pool, the Golden Wave junior swam the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle … and won, helping Tupelo capture the team championship.
“We had kids all up and down the line not swimming their usual events today,” Tupelo coach Lucas Smith said. “We’re seeing what they can do and can’t do. We wanted to get them out of their confort zone.
“We’ve still got some gaps to fill.”
Fremont’s confident he’ll swim his best strokes – the 100-yard butterfly and 200 individual medley – at the Oct. 29 state meet in Cleveland, but he enjoyed the change.
“I was a little surprised to win the 200,” he said. “I knew it would be competitive. I’ve worked hard on my underwater kicks and it was the difference.
“In the 500, I was looking to get out and stay strong.”
Fremont’s winning time in the 200 freestyle was 1:50.24 while he captured the 500 freestyle in 5:06.73.
Also for the Tupelo boys, Eli Jones was a double winner in the 100 freestyle (51.75) and the 100 backstroke (57.43). Rick Deaton won the 50 freestyle (23.24). The Wave also won all three relays – 200 free, 400 free and 200 medley. Fremont, Jones, Deaton, Michael Ray, Hayden Hershfelt and Conner Chase competed in the relays.
In the girls portion of the meet, Bailey Scott and Cris Roberts were double winners – Scott in the 50 free (25.19) and 100 back (1:03.90) and Roberts in the 100 free (58.48) and 200 free (2:06.74).
“I swam what I usually do,” Scott said. “Last week in Oxford I swam the 100 free and won it. I’ll probably swim the 100 free or 100 back at state.”
Lacy Russell won the 200 IM (2:16.97) and finished a close second to Ripley’s Rachel Dees (1:01.86) in the 100 butterfly (1:01.94).
Tupelo won the 200 free and 200 medley relays while Oxford won the 400 free relay. Russell, Scott, Roberts, Rachel Wilson, Morgan Crowley, Chelsie Gray and Lauren Bean were on those units.
Other events winners were: Dora Chen, Oxford, 500 free; Laken Vickers, Starkville, 100 breast; Chang Ye, Starkville, 100 breast; Andy Bond, Starkville, 200 IM; Aaron Ng, MSMS, 100 fly.
