Golden woman killed in Friday crash

Daily Journal reports

FULTON – A head-on collision on Highway 78 in Itawamba County resulted in one death Friday afternoon.

Four other people were injured in the crash, and a teen suffered minor injuries when she ran her vehicle off the road to avoid the wreck.

According to Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Ray Hall, Sybil P. Haber, 78, of Golden, was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of Highway 78. At about 4:50 p.m., her car collided with a car driven by Nanetta S. Shoemaker, 36, of Tupelo, at the 108 mile marker at Reeds Creek. Haber was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shoemaker was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center with minor injuries, and three children traveling in her vehicle were injured – two were minor, and the third child was airlifted to Le Bonheur Children’s hospital in Memphis with serious injuries. Hall said the child was in critical but stable condition Saturday. None of the children were wearing a seat belt.

Shoemaker is the owner of the Smoothie King in Tupelo and the father of the three children is former Tupelo businessman Ray Shoemaker, who is currently in jail for his involvement in a kickback-bribery scheme surrounding Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville.

A third vehicle ran off the road to avoid the wreck and overturned. The driver, a teenager, was wearing a seat belt and reported minor injuries. She was transported to NMMC for treatment.

The crash shut down eastbound lanes of Highway 78 about a mile past Fulton for about one hour.

Both crashes remain under investigation.

what does this have to do with the wreck??? “the father of the three children is former Tupelo businessman Ray
Shoemaker, who is currently in jail for his involvement in a
kickback-bribery scheme surrounding Tri-Lakes Medical Center in
    Batesville.”

  • Cynthia Owen

Sherry they could have left that off about the dad being in jail.. Some people!

  • TupeloRob

I think it is about time that we realize the need to have routine driving tests at least once every 2 years once adults reach the age of 70. This type of thing does not need to happen!

Why wasn’t the information about the woman killed driving on the wrong side of the highway not included in the article? That is what caused the accident. Also the severity of the accident warrants that the children and their mom the driver were all wearing seat belts. They all survived the high speed head on collision.

The author of this article should really be ashamed to ever publish anything again! You used this article as a platform to pass judgement and make allegations about the victims involved in this horrible tragedy! Nanette Shoemaker is a wonderful mother who loves her children! She doesn’t need this type of ignorant negativity right now! It is obvious this was written by an inconsiderate, callous and foolish idiot! I am praying for you, but even more importantly, I am praying for all the parties involved in this tragedy.

“…and the father of the three children is former Tupelo businessman Ray
Shoemaker, who is currently in jail for his involvement in a
kickback-bribery scheme surrounding Tri-Lakes Medical Center in
Batesville.” < I saw this mentioned on a post, but seriously people. That's just filthy, disgusting, and disrespectful to bring up. Is a traffic collision not enough of a story for you? Do you have to add in additional and unnecessary details that are not truly related to "spice up" your story? Sensationalists.

Wow. An all time LOW. I’m sure they know where their dad is. They are innocent U NUMB NUT… Its tragic that she and her kids were seriously hurt. What did that have to do with anything. I’m sure the good readers of North Mississippi applaud u for reminding them. GREAT JOB!!!

  • Tonja Higginbottom

This is so disrespectful…what does naming who the father is have anything to do with this car accident….WRONG IN SO MANY WAYS…It upset me for this to be published!!!!Lord we need you!!!

A new low for the Daily Journal. The article was in very poor taste and lacked what I consider to be quality reporting. So many other angles would have been more informative. Tasteless.

  • barney fife

Including information regarding the absent parent of the children injured in the wreck is pointless and tasteless.
It is apparent that many members of the community demand a more professional level of journalism than has been displayed here.

  • Dontdoitlamont

There goes Tupelo journalism again, painting ugly pictures for black people. What’s the history on the deceased, touched by an angel while on the wrong side of the highway?

    • Ms. Jane Doe

I thoroughly read the article and nowhere does it mention anyone of any color. STOP pulling the race card!! I’m black myself and I’m so sick of it.
