‘Gone with the Wind’ to grace screen at The Lyric

The world of Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler comes alive tonight at The Lyric.
Tupelo Community Theatre is hosting “A Southern Affair on Broadway,” a night of entertainment, trivia, food and a screening of the classic film “Gone with the Wind.”
“What a great way to start off a great season,” said TCT board president Tracie Conwill.
TCT’s season begins with the comedy “Moonlight & Magnolias,” which tells the story of how “Gone with the Wind” was written for film. In the play, the movie’s producer, David O. Selznick, screenwriter Ben Hecht and director Victor Fleming work non-stop for five days on the script. TCT’s production will be at the Lyric Sept. 27-29, said TCT director Tom Booth.
“Gone with the Wind” will screen tonight at 7 p.m., and tickets are available at the door for $10.
Before the movie starts, there will be plenty of “loose and fun” events, all for free, starting at 5 p.m., Booth said.
Suzanne Oakley and Carean Dendy will perform a few sets of songs in the Lyric lobby. Tours of the Lyric will also be given, giving visitors a peek at the building’s history. The Lyric turns 100 in October, Conwill said.
There will also be a “Gone with the Wind” trivia game.
Light refreshments will be served, and there will be a cash bar featuring “Gone with the Wind”-inspired cocktails.
Season tickets will also be on sale, with giveaways for those who purchase that evening.
This screening marks the first time a major motion picture has been shown at the Lyric since the 1980s, Booth said. Most other films shown there have been independent films or part of a film festival, and Booth said he hopes to begin showing classic films again at the theater. The rest of the TCT season includes plays that have a film counterpart, like “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Miracle on 34th Street,” so there’s a chance those movies will screen sometime near the TCT production.
“We want people to take in downtown Tupelo and enjoy the night out,” Booth said.
