Grand jury declines to indict man in 1997 slaying

COLUMBUS — A 47-year-old Columbus man has been released from jail after a Lowndes County jury declined to indict him in a 1997 slaying.

Curtis Hinton turned himself in to the police in July after a warrant was issued for his arrest for his alleged involvement in the death of George Wilbanks.

The Commercial Dispatch reports that Hinton was released from jail Friday after a grand jury issued a “no bill,” meaning the jury did not find enough evidence to indict Hinton on a murder charge.

Ernest Talley was arrested Feb. 17 in connection with the 1997 murder of the 70-year-old Wilbanks. He is awaiting trial.

Wilbanks’ body was discovered in his home Nov. 2, 1997. He had been stabbed and strangled.
