Gray to be Alcorn State commencement speaker

LORMAN — Bill Gray, the former U. S. House of Representatives majority whip, will be the speaker at Alcorn State University’s 140th commencement.

Gray also will receive an honorary degree during the ceremony on May 7.

Alcorn president M. Christopher Brown II said Gray’s “life exemplifies a superb mix of career accomplishments and service.”

Gray is a Baton Rouge, La., native. He served as a Democratic congressman from Philadelphia became the highest-ranking African-American leader in the history of the House of Representatives when he was elected whip in 1989.
