TUPELO – A newly formed Christian relief organization based in Tupelo is rallying churches to help rebuild homes in Chickasaw and Monroe counties.
Adopt a Family will hold an organizational meeting 10 a.m. Saturday at Tupelo First Baptist Church. Members will begin formulating a plan to help families affected by the April tornadoes.
The group’s organizers encourage anyone interested to attend.
According to Steve Tybor, one of four Tupelo residents who make up the organization’s leadership team, the basic idea is for churches to adopt a family for a “12-month journey.”
“There’s an emotional and spiritual component to this rebuilding, as well as actually physically rebuilding homes,” said Tybor.
Churches have many willing volunteers, including skilled craftspeople such as electricians, roofers and plumbers. Tybor said their combined grassroots efforts could greatly aid the project.
“We want to connect the dots and use people’s gifts and talents, including relationships we have in the business community,” said Tybor.
Tupelo First Baptist Church and Hope Church have committed to help, and Tybor hopes to bring dozens more congregations on board. A second meeting will be held at Tupelo First Baptist at 10 a.m. on May 21.
