CORINTH — The Alcorn County Genealogy Society has launched a push to gather information on how the Civil War affected residents of northeast Mississippi and parts of southern Tennessee.

Society member Gale Judkins tells The Daily Corinthian that the group has almost no information from the era. It hopes local families will share letters, diaries and oral stories that recount life in the region during the Civil War and the Reconstruction period that followed.

Judkins said the group is interested in information on Tishomingo, Alcorn and Prentiss counties in Mississippi as well as southern McNairy and Hardin counties in Tennessee.

She says the society can be contacted at 662-286-0075 or by email at acgs2@att.net

They want letters, diaries, and journals from the Civil War era. Uhhh, could confederate soldiers (especially those from Mississippi) read and write? And if they could, what would they have written their materials on? Paper of all kinds was quite scarce during the war.
