Guard holds annual conference in Tupelo

TUPELO – State dignitaries showed their appreciation for the Mississippi National Guard and Air National Guard on Saturday.
U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran, Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant and Congressman Travis Childers all spoke at the 41st annual Mississippi National Guard NCO Conference at the BancorpSouth Conference Center.
More than 300 National Guard and Air National Guard members attended the conference. Guardsman Bo Plunk said the conference is a way to get information to soldiers and their families.
“We are playing a big role in current deployments, so we want to make sure everyone knows what to expect,” said Plunk about the National Guard. “This is a good way to keep everyone informed.”
There are more than 13,000 members of the Guard in Mississippi and Childers said all of them should be commended for what they do.
“I appreciate the sacrifices you all make for this state and country,” said Childers. “The Mississippi National Guard has a long history of service. You have always stood up for our state and our country and for that I thank you.”
Bryant joked that the occasion was so important to him that he gave up a turkey hunting expedition.
“It’s just an honor to be here speaking to you today,” he said. “During Katrina, the first person I came upon when I passed I-10 was a National Guardsman. The service the guard provided during that time was unparalleled.”
The conference concludes today with a banquet.
