Guilty verdict in Monroe Co. murder trial

By Monroe Journal

ABERDEEN — Wayne Hawkins has been convicted by a jury in Monroe Count Circuit Court of depraved heart murder after a jury deliberated over the case for approximately nine hours.

The 52-year-old Monroe County man faces life behind bars.

Hawkins was 44 when he was charged with depraved heart murder in the Aug. 19, 2007, death of Rita Fair at her 22010 Highway 45 North home in Aberdeen.

Prosecutors say Hawkins beat Fair to death in the home they shared, but Hawkins claimed it was self defense. Authorities say the two had a history of domestic violence.
