GUNFIGHT SENDS ONE TO HOSPITAL, TWO TO JAIL

OKOLONA – A gunfight at an Okolona pool hall Friday sent one man to the hospital and two teen-agers to jail.

Calvin Walker, 25, of Okolona was listed in stable condition Friday at North Mississippi Medical Center.

Christopher James, 18, and Kelvin Bowen, 18, both of Okolona, were arrested in connection with the shooting at Picks One Stop on East Street in Okolona, where about six people had gathered outside of the pool hall/grocery store.

Assistant Okolona Police Chief Donna Franks said the incident didn’t originally involve Walker. He got caught in the line of fire.

About 2:30 p.m. Bowen and another man, Derrick Pickens, 25, of Okolona, were involved in an argument when Pickens pulled a .22-caliber handgun and fired it at Bowen, Franks said.

Bowen, Walker, James and two other men ran inside the business with Pickens following.

Once inside, James pulled a .22-caliber handgun and fired it at Pickens. Walker stepped in front of Pickens and was hit in the side.

Franks could not say why James pulled his weapon or why Walker got involved.

James was charged with aggravated assault and Bowen was charged with accessory after the fact. Bond had not been set for either of the teen-agers Friday night.

Charges are pending against Pickens, Franks said.
