GUNTOWN – A man whose body was discovered Thursday night in a wooded area near Guntown died as the result of a hunting accident, officials have ruled.
Billy R. Garrett, 64, of the Blair community near Guntown was found shortly before 10 p.m. in a soybean patch with a shotgun wound to the chest. Lee County Deputy Medical Examiner Jerry Clark said Garrett had been missing since Tuesday, when he left home for a bird-hunting trip.
Clark said it appeared Garrett’s foot got caught in some barbed wire as he tromped through the overgrowth and mud. He apparently tripped, Clark said, and the 12-gauge shotgun he was carrying went off.
Volunteers firefighters from Alpine, Cedar Hill and Guntown joined residents who conducted the search for Garrett. His body was found about a mile from where he had parked his truck just off state Highway 348 two days earlier.
