Hattiesburg part of school bus safety project

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Hattiesburg Public School District is among a handful nationwide testing a guard designed to push any student who falls in front of the passenger-side rear wheels out of the bus’s path.

District transportation director Audrae Barnes says students are more likely to fall near the bus on the side with the door.

Steve Frazee — an official for the manufacturer — tells The Hattiesburg American (http://hatne.ws/ub0mYw) the device is also being tested in two Ohio school districts, and likely will be tested in the West.

Barnes says the guard will be installed on a bus which runs to Hattiesburg High School, Rowan Elementary School and N.R. Burger Middle School.

He says that during his eight years as transportation director, no student has fallen near the rear wheels of a bus.
