HealthWorks! warms up holidays

By Michaela Gibson Morris/NEMS Daily Journal

TUPELO – HealthWorks! is cooking up some healthy fun to break up the Dog Days of December.
From Dec. 17 to Dec. 30, the children’s health education center in Tupelo is adding Holiday Hoopla to its regular programming to help light up holiday vacation times. Reindeer races, foam noodle games, scavenger hunts and more over the course of 10 days.
“Dog days are periods of inactivity,” said Donna Loden, Imaginator of Awesome Experiences or program director. “We’re trying to promote activity.”
On Dec. 28, children 6 to 11 can get an extra dose of HealthWorks! wacky, healthy fun with two half-day camps. The camps combine creativity, fun physical activity and an easy-to-make healthy snack.
“We offer camps to provide a safe, learning environment when moms and dads have to work,” Loden said. “We also ensure that children are not just sitting around playing computer games or watching TV.”
“Happy, Hoopla” from 9 to noon will be a New Year’s celebration-themed camp with activities like Disco ball spins and capturing time in a bottle.
“It’s Snow Much Fun” from 1 to 4 p.m. will have a winter wonderland relay and snow cream snack.
Dog Days activities are included with admission to the center – $5 a person; members free.
Camps are $25 a child; $20 for members. Deadline to sign up is Dec. 22. For children attending both camps, Yummy Yogurt lunch is available for pre-order.
