Hearing set on Columbus budget proposal

COLUMBUS — The City Council will move ahead with a public hearing on a proposed fiscal year 2013 budget.

The Commercial Dispatch reports that during a budget hearing this past week, the council voted to increase garbage rates from $15 to $17 per month. The rate increase was an effort to pare down a deficit of more than $400,000.

Mayor Robert Smith said raising fees is a temporary fix and that the city will have to raise taxes next year.

A public hearing on the budget proposal is set for Sept. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Municipal Complex. The council will meet Sept. 13 to approve the budget.
