PASCAGOULA — Jackson County Emergence Management officials say at least 60 people have been evacuated from flood-prone areas amid heavy rains that are expected to continue into the weekend.
Local emergency management Earl Etheridge says about 50 have been evacuated in Moss Point and about 10 in Pascagoula as streets in low-lying areas flooded out Wednesday night.
The county opened a shelter.
The National Weather Service reports 7 inches of rain fell Wednesday. There’s also an 80 percent chance of rain on Thursday and a 50 percent chance of rain on Friday.
Etheridge says there could also be localized river flooding.
The weather service says rain is expected to fall through Saturday morning and several area rivers will remain above flood stage into early next week.
