HED: ARC grants to build pipeline, improve leadership training

The Appalachian Regional Commission has approved grants to be used in Lee County to assist in infrastructure development and leadership development.

The region’s congressional delegation, consisting of 1st District U.S. Rep. Roger Wicker and the state’s two U.S. senators, Thad Cochran and Trent Lott, said Baldwyn will receive a $300,000 grant and CREATE Foundation in Tupelo will get a $130,000 grant.

Baldwyn will use the grant money to build 40,000 linear feet of high pressure gas line to serve the North Lee Industrial Park. The total cost of the project is estimated at $1.1 million with the Rural Economic and Community Development Administration supplying an $800,000 loan.

The CREATE Foundation grant will be combined with $32,500 in CREATE funding to develop leadership initiatives and produce a series of public service announcements to promote civic involvement.

The CREATE grant will also be used to build a detailed community database that includes information on population, employment, education and health trends.
