HED: Crash claims life of Belmont man

BOONEVILLE – A Belmont man was killed in a Tuesday night car crash as he returned from watching his children play in a high school basketball tournament.

William W. Sparks, 47, of Belmont, died after the 1995 Ford he was driving collided with a 1988 Ford driven by Wade G. Fleming, 44, of Booneville, 4.5 miles east of Booneville on Mississippi Highway 4 at about 10 p.m., according to state Highway Patrol reports.

Fleming was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Booneville with moderate injuries, according to the highway patrol. The hospital confirmed he was admitted, but could not release his condition.

Sparks’ wife, Judy Sparks, 47, was taken to the Booneville hospital for observation. She was released on Wednesday.

The Sparks were returning to Belmont after they watched their daughter, senior Kimberly Sparks, and son, sophomore Brandon Sparks, play with the Belmont Cardinal varsity basketball teams at a Jumpertown tournament, said Belmont High School Principal John Moore.

The Sparks were traveling east and Fleming was heading west when the accident occurred. The vehicles impacted along the drivers’ sides, apparently sideswiping each other, before coming to rest on the south side of the highway, according to the Highway Patrol.

An investigation is continuing into the cause of the accident, troopers said. As of Wednesday, no citations have been filed in the crash.
