HED: Fox show to feature Tupelo police chase

1/7

A police chase through Tupelo and down U.S. Highway 45 is set to be featured on national television tonight.

The Fox Network’s “Wildest Police Videos” is scheduled to show footage tonight of a high-speed chase involving Tupelo police officers and Lee County sheriff’s deputies.

The show will air at 7 p.m. on Tupelo cable channels 8 and 11.

The chase began when a 16-year-old boy without a driver’s license refused to stop for police who noticed the car he was driving had no license tag.

The incident occurred about 6 a.m. on a Sunday morning in September, said Clay Hassell, the Tupelo officer who initiated the stop and taped the chase.

At one point in the chase, the suspect drove the wrong way down U.S. Highway 45 at extremely high speeds, Hassell said.

During the chase, the suspect’s car blew its engine near Shannon, Hassell said. Despite close calls, no one was injured in the chase. The teen, who was arrested on 14 counts related to the case, was processed through Lee County Youth Court.

The tape of the chase was chosen for the show after producers touring the country solicited chase footage from the Tupelo department, Hassell said.
