Hed: Oxford board sets special Ward 6 election
By Jane Hill
OXFORD – The Oxford Board of Aldermen set a special election date at their regular meeting Tuesday night.
The election is to fill the unexpired term of Joe M. Hudspeth, the Ward 6 alderman who died April 11.
Oxford City Clerk Virginia Chrestman said the board passed an order for a special election to be held May 28.
The election will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Oxford Activity Center, located at the corner of Price Street and Molly Barr Road. Only Ward 6 residents will be permitted to vote in the election.
Any person wishing to be a candidate for the seat must be a resident and a qualified elector of Ward 6 and must file a petition with the city clerk’s office at least 10 days before May 28. Each candidate’s petition must have no fewer than 50 signatures from qualified voters who are also residents of Ward 6.
A registered voter may sign more than one petition for different candidates seeking the post.
The Ward 6 alderman’s term will expire in the summer of 1997 when new city elections are scheduled to be held.
Hudspeth died of respiratory failure at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi last week. He was 74 years old.
A 34-year resident of Oxford, Hudspeth served as alderman-at-large from 1985 to 1989. In 1993, he was elected alderman for Ward 6 and served in that capacity until his death.
