Hed: Three get perfect scores in Super Quiz
Three Tupelo High School students competing in this weekend’s National Academic Decathlon competition in Atlanta earned perfect scores Saturday in the oral segment of the gameshow-style Super Quiz event.
Junior Sarah Robinson and seniors Brandon Ashcraft and Bryant Hill answered each of their five United Nations-related questions correctly. Overall, the team tied for 10th place from a field of 45 teams. The team answered 39 of the possible 45 questions correctly.
The team also spent Saturday taking written tests in specific subject areas, which range from the humanities to the sciences.
Hill, who is the only returning student on the team, said he felt better about his performance this year.
“I was more prepared because I put more into it,” he said. “At this point, we feel like we’ve tried our best and whatever happens, happens. That’s the general consensus.”
Ashcraft said the team was more comfortable with their performance on Friday’s essay and speech segments than Saturday’s written tests.
“I think we really did well yesterday in the subjective areas,” he said. “Today on the test, there were several things we weren’t sure of, but when we got together and talked about what we wrote, we kept finding that we all wrote the same answers. We just have to wait and see.”
That wait will be over at around noon today, when the event’s awards program is scheduled. Following the program, the group plans to leave for Six Flags.
“We worked really hard and we’re relieved that it’s over,” Ashcraft said. “We are ready to just kick back and have a good time.”
