Hed: Two held on child abuse charge

Two people were arrested by Lee County sheriff’s deputies Tuesday after the county grand jury returned an indictment charging them with felony child abuse.

Angela M. Thomason, 18, 903 S. Green St. in Tupelo, and Donald Shemwell, 26, 2911 River Road in Mantachie, were being held in the County Jail with bond set at $20,000 each.

Sheriff’s investigator Sgt. John Hall said Thomason was the mother of a 4-month-old child transported to North Mississippi Medical Center Feb. 2. The child was not breathing.

The following day, the revived child was sent to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis. A child abuse investigator at Le Bonheur later notified Lee County authorities it appeared that the child suffered trauma by abuse.

After an investigation by the sheriff’s office and the state Department of Human Services, the case was presented to the April term of the grand jury, which returned a true bill, Hall said.

The incident occurred in Verona, he said.
